History of the United Kingdom
Great Britain has played a key role in developing modern science, industry and parliamentary democracy. The United Kingdom was formed in 1801 by the unification of Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales) and Ireland. An independent Irish state was formed in 1922, but Northern Ireland still belongs to the UK. The British Empire at its greatest extent covered about 25% of the world's land surface. Though victorious in World Wars I and II, Britain suffered great losses. Today it is one of the most advanced countries of the European Union.
