History of Spain
Spain was a major world power until the 17th century. Had a great influence in Europe and colonized much of the Americas. The empire declined due to wars and the lack of modernization. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered much in a devastating civil war. Transition to democracy and an economic growth as well as the restoration of the kingdom started in 1975. Spain became a member of the European Union in 1986.
