History of Portugal
Portugal was a pioneer of the Age of Discoveries, became a great world power in the 15th century and built an extensive empire throughout the world. Its power and wealth declined in wars and loss of colonies, especially Brazil. The revolution in 1910 replaced the kingdom with a republic. Democratic reforms were implemented in 1975 and the economic growth began. Portugal joined the European Union in 1986.
