New Zealand was settled by Polinesian tribes about 700 years ago. First European contact was in 1642, while the large scale immigration from Europe began in the 19th century. British
sovereignty was declared in 1841 after a treaty with the indigenous Maoris. New Zealand troops took part in World Wars I and II. British
rule formally ended in 1986, however New Zealand remains a constitutional monarchy and a Commonwealth realm.
