History of Italy
Though once the central province of the ancient Roman Empire, Italy was no more than a geographical term until 1861, when the numerous states on the Italian peninsula and the islands of Sicily and Sardinia united. Italy's alliance with Germany in World War II led to a defeat. The development of economy and democracy resulted in a modern state which is a founding member of the European Union.
