You can get to England through the Channel Tunnel by train that also carries cars and trucks. France has an extensive road and motorway network. History of France
The French Revolution in 1789 replaced the absolute monarchy with a republic. Napoleon seized the power and conquered a large part of Europe in the early 19th century. Although finally victorious in World Wars I and II, France suffered great losses. Now it is one of the world's most advanced countries and largest economies. As a pioneer of the European unity France is a founding member of the European Union.
