History of the Czech Republic
Bohemia and Moravia came under Habsburg rule in the 16th century. After World War I, the independent country of Czechoslovakia was created. The Czech lands were annexed by Germany and later occupied by Soviet forces in World War II. Communist rule started in 1948 and lasted until 1989. Czechoslovakia was peacefully dissolved to Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1993. Both countries became members of the European Union in 2004.
