The busiest airport in China is Beijing and all major cities are served by domestic and international airports. The large distances make air travel the fastest way to reach distant destinations. China has one of the largest rail networks in the world. There are local and long distance bus lines as well. An extensive road and motorway network has been developed during the last decades. Most of the motorways are toll roads. In the special administrative regions Hong Kong and Macao vehicles drive on the left side of the road while there is right side traffic in all other parts of China. There are many navigable inland waterways, the most important is the Yangtze River.

During World War II, a war of resistance was fought against Japan that occupied much of China. The civil war that emerged afterwards resulted in the victory of the communists. Governments from the 1990's transformed the Chinese economy into a fast growing market economy while still retaining the one-party political system.
