History of Brazil
The first Portuguese settlement in Brazil was established in 1532. The government of Portugal was moved to Brazil in 1808. The king returned to Europe in 1821, leaving his son as regent, who declared the independence of Brazil one year later. It was a monarchy until 1889 when the republic was installed by a military coup. Military regimes and democratic governments followed one another until 1985 when the democracy was finally restored.
