History of Belgium
Belgium became independent of the Netherlands in 1830. It was occupied by Germany during World Wars I and II. Belgian economy recovered quite rapidly and the continual development resulted in a modern, prospering country. Tensions between the Flemings and Walloons led to granting autonomy to these regions. Belgium is a founding member of the European Union and the seat of its several institutions.
