All you Ever Needed to Know about Wellington Zoo, New Zealand
Wellington Zoo is the oldest and only zoological garden in Wellington New Zealand and was founded in 1906. Located just a 10 minute drive away from the central city, this quaint little zoo takes advantage of its surroundings, with lush greenery and many hills surrounding an in the compounds itself.
When you first get to Wellington Zoo you'll notice that unlike most, this zoo is a pretty small one. However, this zoo has many strong features and exhibits that draw the crowds year after year. Home to over 100 native and exotic species including some of the world's endangered like the Sumatran Tiger, Wellington Zoo takes pride in doing its part toward international conservation and this is widely seen throughout the Zoo.
As the zoo isn't big enough to house elephants and such, majority of the animals here are big cats and primates of different species. You also won't find any snakes or any venomous creatures here or in New Zealand at all as they want to preserve the flora and fauna as best they can. Visit the African Savannah, a mixed species habitat where the giraffes and antelope all live as well, or stop by monkey island and watch the primates goof around having fun.
For a little something extra, go for one of their close encounter programs. Get up close and personal with their famous Red Panda and hand feed them their loved snacks all while learning a little bit more about this rare species. If you are more of a cat lover than the thought of getting up close with a cheetah or a big cat would thrill you. Learn about these magnificent creatures and why they're endangered, work behind the scenes with the big cats and assist with their training or stroke a cheetah and listen to the sounds of the big cat purring. These programs are awfully popular though so book well in advance so you won't be disappointed.
If you take a walk around Wellington Zoo, you'll feel that there's a difference between Wellington Zoo and those you might have been too. Currently Wellington Zoo has plans in motion to develop three themes to promote and create awareness toward the environment and its animals. With some zoo's, their main purpose is to attract and generate revenue, but over here the care and concern for these animals emit from the keepers and the lifestyle at the zoo.
