Private Guided Hiking in New Zealand - An Affordable Alternative
Most people who consider going on a hiking adventure in a far off destination are often put off by large group numbers, by hiking standards, strict schedules and a set itinerary.

Well, it doesn't have to be like that and the alternative has a lot of advantages over pre organized group hiking adventures. Private guided adventures are a fantastic option to consider and can enhance and broaden your experience.

One of the first things to come to mind is cost. I'm not going to lie to you, they are more expensive than mass guided adventures but when you weigh up the advantages you might be pleasantly surprised at the extra features and benefits you get by traveling with a private guide.

One of the major benefits is choice. When you take on a private guide you have a big input in to what you do and how you do it. You wont be able to do everything you want as some walks are restricted and safety plays a big part but your guide will be able to provide you with advice on what would be within your capabilities so you will get the most out of your adventure.

Impacts, both environmental and social, are issues that influence a lot of hikers and are also an important factor for operators of any adventure tourism based business. Pressures rise on the environment as more and more adventure seekers head for the outdoors. The visual and physical impact can encroach on not only your experience but also other adventure seekers, so traveling with a private guide is one way to minimize your impact.

Weather is one thing we can't change. Its one of the things that can ruin any trip and in New Zealand one of the few things you can't guarantee is the weather. This is where flexibility comes in to it. As it is you, or a small group of friends on the trip, private trips have the option of being flexible allowing your group and the guide to choose the best option depending on the circumstances.

Many people are put off private trips as they feel there won't be a chance to interact with fellow travelers with just themselves and their guide but the backcountry huts used in our National Parks would have to be one of the most social environments around. You all have something in common and everybody always wants to know where you've come from, and where you're going so there's always a conversation starter. On the other hand if it is solitude you are after you are able to access a lot of areas that are out of reach to other groups due to group size limits, so on these trips you can really get away from it all.

To hire a private guide you don't just have to be looking for overnight backcountry adventures. They are usually available for multi day tours with the participants only doing day walks as opposed to overnight hikes with hotel style accommodation each night.

Flexibility is the key here, you can design your own adventure, not go on someone else's so if your looking for a fantastic hiking or adventure holiday, hiring a private guide might be the way to go, so start planning and get in touch with one, you might be surprised...
