The Famous Cane Toad Races
Only those who have been to Australian pubs will have had the pleasure of witnessing a cane toad race. Pure Aussie fun mixed with raw humour, these well known pests are taken to the dance floor and released! 10 toads are sponsored, named and numbered. The toads are released from a bucket and the first toad to reach the edge of the dance floor is deemed the winner.

Terry Doyle host of the show claims "toad racing is getting popular in Cairns, tourists don't get to do this anywhere else but only here in Australia, they love the raw aussie humour, though some aren't too sure how to take it, but they all end up having a good night here" the zany gags and prizes to go with it also make it so popular, especially after a few beers". Terry is also an experienced and professional musician with his father son band "The Doyles" who usually play before the Cane Toad races.

After a fancy dress parade by selected women, the toads are taken to the starting bucket. The countdown starts and the bucket is lifted. Dressed in his wildlife outfit and enthusiasm similar to that of Steve Irwin, Terry gives the toads a little boost of confidence and a Sydney sponsored toad "Crack a Fat" makes the first move. The crowd in hysterics and Terry calling the action sparks a second toad to charge toward the edge of the dance floor. English sponsored toad "Her Majesty" then takes the lead jumping toward the edge of the dance floor stopping only centimeters short. English voices screaming in an attempt to move the thing off the dance floor. All of a sudden an insect sparks New Zealand sponsored toad "Kiwi" into a fury of action jumping through the caller's legs and off the edge of the dance floor. All over in a matter is seconds! The official word from Terry has Kiwi winning by a poison sack!

The toads are then collected and put back in the bucket for the next race. Prizes are given to the sponsor of the winning toad while others sponsor their toad for the second race of the night. Such popularity are the cane toad races that it has cause some criticism as some people claim it is cruel to the animal. The cane toad is a growing pest through-out northern Australia and the view is that throughout the race the cane toads should be treated as you would any other animal, not too rough and not causing injury. There is no cruelty to the toads!

Cane toads are one of the biggest environmental pests ever introduced into Australia and kill scores of native wildlife. They are frozen after the night and then disposed of in humane manner. By doing this we are helping our environment and saving native wildlife. The World famous Toad Races have become so popular with tourists in Cairns North Queensland that they are held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Johno's Blues Bar. Entry to the club is free the music is great and the whole night is pure entertainment for any adult.
