Fresno is the sixth largest city in California and is found in the San Joaquin Valley which lies south of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta in Stockton. Like most of California, it boasts a Mediterranean climate which means hot, dry summers and quite mild winters. The name 'Fresno' comes from the Spanish word for 'Ash Tree' which fits the area well, as it is located just one hundred kilometers from both Yosemite National Park and Kings Canyon National Park. Fresno is a really pretty city, and there's lots to do and see there. Here are some of my favorite ways to pass the time in the city.
My number one spot has got to be the weird and interesting Forestiere Underground Gardens, which are a network of underground caverns, grottoes, patios and garden courts, built by a Sicilian immigrant, Baldasare Forestiere. This man designed and sculpted the gardens himself, which he did so as to escape the heat of Fresno during the summer months. The gardens are located in Northwest Fresno, near Highway 99, and took Forestiere an entire forty years to create.
The Fresno Metropolitan Museum of Art and Science is located in downtown Fresno and has recently undergone a three year renovation, having been opened initially in 1984. At the museum there are numerous exhibitions, which change all the time, and also an impressive art collection, which consists of more than 3,000 works of art. Some examples of the gorgeous collections include the Ansel Adams Photo Collection, Decorative Arts and Crafts, Native American Collection and Botanical Prints. Going here is a really fun and interesting day out on your own, or also with a family.
The Fresno Chaffee Zoo is located between Belmont and Olive Avenues, and houses approximately one hundred and twenty five species of animals, including Keel-billed Toucan, Malayan Tiger, Fennec Fox, Ring-tailed Lemur, Red Wolf, and Orangutan. It is also the only zoo in North America which houses Northland green geckos and Southern tent tortoises. There is also an excellent educational department in the zoo which is a great resource for parents. Although, the zoo is fun for everybody, both children and adults.
Finally, one of the best things to do in Fresno is just to take a carefree wander around the city. Being the county seat of Fresno County, there are lots of excellent restaurants, bars and cafés, as well as attractive architecture, museums and art galleries.
