After the people for Spain established a presidio and mission in 1776, Yerba Buena, a small village grew up in the vicinity. The Americans entered the land in a huge wave at the time of the California Gold Rush in 1849.

Soon the city became a commercial center, constructed elegant Victorian houses, and a cable car. In 1906, a massive earthquake as well as devastating fire shook up the city, erasing as many as 500 blocks. In the famous Jackson Square Historic District, you will find many brick buildings, which withstood the serious disaster. San Francisco rebuilt it self in 1915 during the Panama Pacific International Exhibition. The Bay and Golden Gate Bridges were built in the 1930s and the city continued to develop.

Chinatown is the evidence of the historical phase of the city when California was occupied with Chinese immigrants during the gold rush.
