Fun Things to do While Visiting San Francisco
San Francisco always has plenty of great things for visitors to do, from fun walking tours of the city to riding a cable car and even some of the best nightlife in the nation. Whatever your cup of tea, you are sure to find something in the city that will appeal to you.
Riding the Cable Car
No visit to San Francisco can be considered complete without a ride on the cable cars that are so famous the world over. It is a great way to take a tour of the city and give your legs a rest from climbing all of those hills.
Fisherman's Wharf
Another iconic part of the city is Fisherman's Wharf, which encompasses the northern waterfront area of San Francisco. Many shops exist here, but the area is probably most famous for the plethora of excellent seafood restaurants. It is one of the most visited spots in all of San Francisco.
The Golden Gate Bridge
This is one of the most famous bridges in the world, having been in postcards, photos, and movies since it was created in 1937 and looks simply beautiful with the fog rolls into the bay. It is still one of the largest suspension bridges in the world and a symbol of the city and California.
Union Square
For the shoppers in your group, you may want to spend some time at Union Square, which offers a number of restaurants, theaters, and shops like Saks Fifth Avenue, Tiffany's, and Macy's. You can also find several wonderful hotels in the area. Union Square makes a great base of operations for your San Francisco visit.
Golden Gate Park
A magical place exists right within the city. Golden Gate Park, with an area larger than Central Park in New York, is a truly amazing place. There is a carousel, a herd of buffalo, and several museums. The botanical gardens are something that photographers are not going to want to miss.
Alcatraz
The Rock, as Alcatraz was also known, is an island that sits in the San Francisco Bay and was once the home of a prison that was nigh inescapable. If prisoners were able to get out of their cells, the cold pacific waters between the island and the bay were sure to stop them. Today, you can take both day and nighttime tours of the infamous prison, which many believe is actually haunted by the ghosts of those who perished there. It seems that even spirits can't escape this island.
Muir Woods
You can take a trip over the bridge, visit the Muir Woods National Preserve, and check out one of the last stands of Coast Redwood trees in the area. It is a great getaway for the day. You will find plenty of hiking trails, including paved trails that are handicap accessible.
San Francisco offers something for everyone, and if you are the adventurous type, you might find something to love that you didn't even expect.
