Disney's New Orleans Square was opened in 1967 to feature elegant architecture, high-class entertainment and scrumptious fine dining. Two of Disneyland's most popular vacation attractions can be found in New Orleans Square. They are Disney The Haunted Mansion and The Pirates of the Caribbean.
Weird Story of Disney's Haunted Mansion - Believe it or not
The Haunted Mansion was concieved as a walk through attraction which guests would visit various special effects created of scenes of horror. I am baffled as to why people are willing to pay money to be terrified.
Disney's engineering and designing teams were at that time looking for a suitable mansion to build The Haunted Mansion attraction. They finally settled on Evergreen House in Baltimore. The mansion's owner, an old lady with Alzheimer disease who was too sick to look after herself and was going to be moved to a state sponsored rest home.
After some negotiations, Disney representatives traded her a pair of Disneyland passes for the house and gave her a week to move out. The house was then airlifted to Disneyland in a single piece where it sat empty and mysterious for six lonely years. Did I said empty? Wasn't the mansion supposed to be inhabited by ghosts?
Then rides were created for the Haunted Mansion with a themed storyline. The storyline was that there was a ship captain who fell in love with a young lady. They intended to marry after the man returned from a seafaring trip. Sadly, the young captain never returned, and his bride to be spent the rest of her life standing at the attic window in her wedding dress waiting for him. She is still there... waiting.
An evil curse was also put on the captain, who was actually a pirate. The spirits of all his victims returned to his home to spend the rest of eternity singing a never ending crazy song. A man and wife team psychic investigators heard about the haunted house and came to investigate. The woman found the house's psychic force so strong that she was driven mad by the repetitive crazy singing. The man was so upset by his wife's fate, that he hung himself, after which he decided to stay in the house with his wife's spirit. This man is your Disney vacation Haunted Mansion ghostly tour guide.
The storyline is visible throughout the attraction. Such as: • Certain sailing adornment indicating that the place was owned by a seafarer. • The ghostly bride is still there waiting in the attic for her beloved ship captain. • The both the psychic investigators are there in their ghostly forms. • The ghosts are still singing incessantly.
At the base of the steps just below the front door is an old-fashioned hearse being drawn by a spectral ghost horse. This is a real hearse, not a recreation. On the hill behind the mansion is a graveyard. There is also a pet cemetery. Actors dressed as demons and ghosts from the mansion began appearing from time to time to thrill and frighten guests. It really beats me that why people are willing to pay money to get scared out of their withs on their Disney vacation.
Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean
Pirates of the Caribbean is one of Disney New Orleans' most popular vacation attractions. This Disney creation is so popular that movies are made from the rides. The ride is built mainly underground and is filled with water - taking advantage of New Orleans' famed high water table. Guests travel in boats through two sets of scenes - one featuring skeletons in pirate infested squalors and the other populated with robotic pirates fighting, looting, abusing women and torturing victims.
Pirates of the Caribbean was upgraded in 2004 and 2006. With the world wide release of the Pirate of the Caribbean movies, the rides are getting so popular that huge queues are formed making the ride an ordeal while queuing to get in.
