Transportation: The Central R.R.Station is the terminus for most public transportation. There are buses and trams. A one day ticket is best for tourists... otherwise, tickets at vending machines only. The hills around Zurich make walking a little difficult.
Kloten Airport: Connected with city center by a train going to the Arrival Terminal every 20-30 minutes... takes 10 minutes.
Kunsthaus: #1 Heimplatz. Tue-Fri 10-9, Mon 2-5, Sat/Sun 10-5. This Fine Arts Museum houses an especially fine collection... Rubens, Hals, Rembrandt, Picasso, Chagall, Miro, and all of the Impressionists. Beautiful building/good lighting, nice collection.
E.G. Buhrle Collection: #172 Zollikerstrasse. Tue/Fri only... 2-5 PM. An important private collection housed in a beautiful villa. Outstanding and famous works by the Impressionists, as well as Rembrandt and Rubens.
Fraumunster Cathedral: 9-12, 2-6. This Gothic church was begun in 1170, and now includes 5 impressive windows by Chagall. Morning light is best.
Schweizerisches Landesmuseum: Tue-Sun 10-5. Closed Mon. This is the Swiss National Museum with a collection of Swiss antiquities...model rooms, costumes, weapons, instruments and clocks. Popular with tourists. Located beside the R.R. Station. The museum is fun! There's a beautiful, relaxing park beside the museum.
Old Town: On both sides of the Limmat River... cobblestone streets, narrow lanes, and fountains. Cross Quai Bridge for an impressive view of the city, and stop at Grossmunster Church, near City Hall, an enormous Romanesque/Gothic church begun in 1100. Also... Peterhofstatt, charming square with old buildings.
Lindenhof Hill: A tree covered lookout point above Fraumunster Cathedral... was a fort in Celtic times. Lovely view of old town.
Uetliberg Observation Tower: Train departs from Selnau Station and reaches the summit in 30 minutes.
Boat trip on the lake: Daily cruises from 1 1/2 - 4 hours. Departs from Zurichhorn every half hour from 1 - 6.
Botanical Garden: #107 Zollikerstrasse, near Buhrle Villa. Beautiful.
Shopville: Shopping for people in a hurry... in the under passage of the Railway Station.
Note: Zurich is a major rail center and makes a good home base in Switzerland. Day trips by rail can then be taken to all the Swiss cities.
