Lucerne Travel Guide - Things to See
Transportation: Walking is best. Also trams and buses... most can be boarded at R. R. Station Square. Purchase tickets from machines.

Mount Pilatus: A trip to the top will be a highlight of your visit. The best and most interesting way to go: Take a Lake Steamer (Free with Eurail Pass) to Alpnachstad. From there take the Cog-Railway to Pilatus-Kulm. This is the steepest railroad in the world, and the view to the top will thrill you. The railway runs every 45 minutes. At the peak, you'll find hotels, restaurants, and fabulous views. Return to Lucerne by cable car to Kriens, get off and continue by ski lift to lower ground, and then follow the signs to the trolley. Trolley #1 returns you to the R.R. Station. A fantastic trip... takes about 3 hours with a beer break at the top.

Kapellbrucke: Chapel Bridge is a red-roofed, wooden structure built over the Reuss River, dating from 1333. On the inside partitions are 120 paintings illustrating the history of Lucerne. The bridge is 560 feet long and is a symbol of Lucerne.

Lowendenkmal: This Lion Monument is hewn out of a sandstone cliff to commemorate the Swiss Mercenaries who died defending the Tuileries during the French Revolution. Above the Lion Monument are the Glacier Gardens, whose glaciers have frozen the clock in time. Ice age relics are on view in the Museum. Daily 8-6. Closed Monday. Bus #1 to both attractions.

Old Town: See Town Hall on Kornmarkt Square and Weinmarkt Square with lovely buildings and fountains. See the beautiful paintings on the buildings.

Rhyn-Haus: On Furrengasse, east of Town. lO-12, 2-6. Closed Mon. This 17th c. building houses a small but choice collection by Picasso.

Hofkirche Cathedral: The major church of Lucerne... with an interesting courtyard and tombstones in the wall.

Musegg Tower: A ruin of a 1332 fortress... on the hills above the city.

Mannerturm Tower: For a sea gull view of the city.

Verkehrshaus: This Transportation Museum at #5 Lidostrasse is more interesting than the name implies... ships, trains, planes, etc. open 9-6. Bus #2.

Kunstmuseum: Small collection of European paintings. Closed Mon. This is a very weak collection, and not worth a visit.

Boat cruises on Lake Lucerne are free with Eurail Pass.
