Basel City Guide - Things to See
Transportation: Buses and Trams. Purchase tickets in advance at any station. A one day ticket is available. Clear maps pinpoint your journey.

Kunstmuseum: This Fine Arts Museum is located at 16 St. Alban Graben. Hours are 10-5 . Closed Monday. Houses the best collection in Switzerland... early German and Flemish art... and the largest collection of paintings by Holbein anywhere. Also an excellent collection of The Impressionists. Don't miss the delightful and amusing Tingley Sculpture which "goes off" only once a day at 1 PM. This huge sculpture moves like a giant clock-works and emits all kinds of strange sounds, which can be heard all over the museum.

Munster Cathedral: This 12th century Gothic church is located on a beautiful square. Fine views of the city from the towers. Hours are Monday to Friday 10-6, Saturday 2-5, Sunday 1-5.

Spalentor (Spalen Gate): Considered Basel's greatest monument... from about 1400.

Wettstein Bridge: Architecturally, the bridge is not exceptional, but the views of the city from the bridge are outstanding.

Old Town: See Town Hall (Rathaus)... and Market Square, which dates from the 16th century. Market Square is a good location to "watch people".

Gegenwartskunst: This Museum of Contemporary Art is located at 60 St. Alban-Rheinweg. Hours... Tue-Sun 10-12, 2-5. Closed Monday. Excellent collection, which includes many U.S. artists.
