5 Great Places to Visit in Historic Madrid
Many say that Madrid is the heart of Spain. As the capital of Spain for more than 400 years and the main political center, as well as a cultural Mecca and popular tourist destination, it is hard to argue against this. There are many great things for visitors to see and do while in Madrid, and quite a bit of it can be done while on a budget. Madrid holds a lot of history, and there are plenty of great opportunities to take photos as well. It is a fun and lively city just as important and as vibrant today as it ever was.

The Gran Via

Easily the most famous street in all of Madrid, the Gran Via is something that no one would want to miss while on their vacation. You can take in some of the Spanish culture as you snap pictures of some of the most impressive architecture you are ever likely to see. There are several large hotels here, and you may even wish to book one and use the Gran Via as a base of operation for all of your other Madrid adventures.

The Royal Palace

Located just a short distance from the Plaza de Espana has more than 2000 rooms. Tourists can visit 50 of these rooms, all of which are beautifully decorated. It is a great way to see how royalty lives even though the current royal family doesn't live there.

Casa de America

The Casa de America, which is located in the Palacio de Linares, showcases Latin American art by both well known and newer artists. Besides the artwork, there are also films and other events to keep visitors entertained.

Prado Museum

One of the most famous museums in Madrid is the Prado Museum, which houses works by acclaimed artists such as Velasquez and Goya. It is a great opportunity for art and history lovers to experience that architecture and art of the country. There is a lot to see, so you may wish to get to the museum early and spend the whole day checking out some of the finest Spanish art the world has to offer, as well as great Italian and Flemish artwork.

Reina Sofia Museum

On the former site of a hospital, the Reina Sofia Museum is one of the premier places to find contemporary art in the city. Visitors can see paintings by many of the modern masters, including Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali. After perusing the artwork in the museum, you can grab a bite to eat at the restaurant located on site.

Don't forget to visit all of the unique shops that Madrid has to offer, as well as all of the great food you can find in the various restaurants and cafés.
