Holidays in Alhaurin De La Torre, Costa Del Sol, Andalucia, Spain
Alhaurin de la Torre is a prehistoric dated town in the Malaga province of Andalusia, Southern Spain. Snugly nestled at the entrance to the Guadalhorce valley on the slopes of the Sierra de Mijas mountains, 10.5 miles (17 km) from Málaga city. Citrus fruit, avocado and olive groves pleasure the senses, the colours and aromas play testament to its agrarian history. The ancient contributions of the Phoenicians, the Moors and the Christian settlements are blended with the need to supply a modern infrastructure for its rapidly expanding commercial and tourist sectors. Travelling through the Moorish influence of the white washed streets of Barrio Viejo to your hotel or a more modern villa will be a walk through time that you will profoundly remember.
The gardens of El Retiro are a must see that will etch a fond memory. Founded in the 17th Century by the then bishop of Malaga who originally used this grand place as a retirement home, hence the name. The gardens are well known for their flora and fauna. The gardens are divided into different sections, each with their own natural climatically controlled habitats, indigenously recreated, to house the creatures living in them. The manor house has been pain-stakingly restored to reflect the period of history that the bishop lived through.
The Lauro Golf and Country Club's 27-hole par 72 course is set upon an area of outstanding beauty. Fourteen lakes, a host of ancient and newer trees, wild game, soaring birds of prey enjoy the perfect habitat alongside the sporting golfer and visitor alike. Their clubhouse is an ancient Andalusian building, which offers an excellent restaurant, a swimming pool and a paddle-tennis court.
For more relaxing pursuits, the Costa del Sol hosts the closest beaches to Alhaurin del la Torre and is approximately half an hour's drive away. It boasts a consistently warm annual temperature of 17°C. It is also ideal for hiking around the local mountains and nearby areas.
The main hotels in the immediate area are the three star Cortijo Chico and the other is the Sol Andalusi Health & Spa Resort that has received very good reviews. Renting a holiday home is another option and with the town having being progressive in its development but steeped in history, these can vary considerably from modern designed apartments to the quaint taste of the past townhouse.
Alhaurin del la Torre has a host of bars and restaurants where you can sample the local delicacies. The town will also provide you with all the essentials you need. Though, if this is not enough, Marbella - a stone's throw away, with its famous Golden Mile is sure to satisfy even the pickiest shopper.
Also check out, before booking what local "ferias" are being held at the time. These are festivals held at different times of the year and are the heart and soul of the local culture. Their experience will be well worthwhile.
