10 Fun Things to Do in and around Alicante
Alicante in Southern Spain is a city which is popular for its beaches, long hours of sunshine and because of its accessibility from other countries. Below we look at some fun things you can do whilst you stay in this lovely location.
1. Visit the Santa Barbara Castle - This is a splendid castle located near the Playa del Postiguet. It is accessible to the public. From here, you are treated to a breathtaking view of the town and harbour below.
2. Take a stroll along The Ramblas - Here you can soak in the sights and sounds of Alicante. Every night, stalls which sell local wares are set up here. Take your time to browse among these products and leave with a pretty souvenir. Remember to bargain for the prices you want.
3. Relax as Playa de San Juan - This is one of Alicante's most accessible and most beautiful beaches. It is considered one of the best and you will find yourself not wanting to leave its soft white sands.
4. Watch a bullfight - Bullfights are a longstanding Spanish tradition that still carries on today. If you are not up for the gore, head over to the museum at Plaza de Toros where you can learn about bullfighting and view the fascinating costumes and pictures.
5. Take a trip to La Explanada de Espana - This is one of Alicante's highlights and is not to be missed. It is a romantic, grand location which you can enjoy best during dusk.
6. Enjoy the Bonfires of St John - This is a festival commemorating the summer solstice. It is followed by a bombastic showcase of fireworks and pyrotechnic contests which takes place during a week-long event held on Playa del Postiguet.
7. Enjoy the view from Castillo de Santa Barbara - This is yet another beautiful castle located on Mt. Benacantil. Its impressive architecture shows clear signs of Carthaginian influences. You will find plenty of beautiful photo opportunities here.
8. Head to Callosa de Segura - This is a small scenic village. Every year, it reenacts the Passion of the Christ in March. It is a simple and yet compelling presentation that you may want to consider going for.
9. Watch a music show in Cueva de Canalobre - This is actually a cave with amazing rows of stalagmite and stalactites. There are actually lights, audio and a stage here for performances and concerts. There is also a great view of the sea from here. Watching a performance here makes for a truly unique experience.
