Holiday in the Algarve
Every year Christmas comes and goes with it seems very little fuss in Portugal. It is a time to reflect and as a very Catholic Community to seek spritual guidance. The Portuguese main day is Christmas Eve where all families become one and eat traditional Portuguese meals, normally Bacalhau (Dried Fish).

On Christmas Eve the children also open their gifts and the evening goes long into the night, therefore Christmas day is slow and quiet affair, unlike in a Country like UK and USA where Christmas day is the main party day.

On Boxing day ( in the UK) the Portuguese generally go back to work and Christmas is over... then comes the Passagem de Ano or New Years Eve.

The best place to be for this is Albufeira beach in the old town (Fishermans Beach) where a huge stage is erected and a nights free entertainment given. Over the last decade has given free concerts by UB40, Sir Cliff Richard, Nelly Furtado and in 2009 it will be The Gift and Madcon.

At Midnight the whole Algarve lights up with over 30 firework displays and Albufeira has a 15 minute display which is just breathtaking. Then the free concert plays the party goers on the beach long into the night, usually competing celebrations around 4am.

The following 3 days are a quiet period in most countries, but in the Algarve we then have a 3 day party in Paderne, with the Medieval festival of Paderne. The main area is at the Castle of paderne and in the village itself, with jousting, sword fighting and many stalls, with food and drink.

So on 31st December you step forward into a New Year and on the 1st til 3rd January 2010 you can step back 500.... You can not do this anywhere else than in the Algarve, Portugal
