Puy-de-Dome is a department in the centre of France. It is named after Puy-de-Dome, which is a very famous dormant volcano. It is one of the original 83 departments that were created during the French Revolution. It was created on 4th of March 1790. Originally it was supposed to be called as Mont d'Or which means golden mountain however this was judged as being not very egalitarian name. Puy-de-Dome is very richly diverse in all aspects. Puy-de-Dome is an Outdoor Enthusiast's Paradise because of having places worth visit during both summer and the winter season. It is a region rich with lakes, mountains, forests chateaus, spas and medieval villages.
Geography
Surrounded by the departments of Allier, Loire, Creuse, Cantal, Haute-Loire, Correze is a part of the current region of Auvergne. It lies in the Massif Central boasting of more than 80 volcanic craters. Landscape and flora and fauna are all very diverse in the region. Ospreys, roe deer, eagles, stags, Red squirrels, eagle owls and mouflon sheep are some of the many species of birds and animals that inhabit in this beautiful place of Puy-de-Dome. There are many mountains, plateaus, volcanic lakes, plains and dormant volcanoes. The areas like Saint Nectaire, La Bourboule and Le Mont Dore are also famous for its thermal springs and many spas that provide therapies and treatments for various ailments.

There are many Romanesque churches as well as chateaus in here. Parentignat, saint Nectaire, Murol are very famous for the chateaus and churches. The Saint Nectaire is of particular historic note. Puy-de-Dome is also famous for its myriad of hiking and walking trails and hence is a major destination for orienteering. The Sancy Mountains, Chain of Puys and Cezellier Mountains are all full of beauty. Enthusiasts of walking and also those who have interest in wildlife and history have specific interest in Murol and The Vallee de Chaudfour and Thiers and Chateldon are very popular tourist destinations in Puy-de-Dome. The dormant volcanic mountain Puy-de-Dome is however the most famous tourist destination in the Puy-de-Dome region. Cyclists, as well as rock climbing and aerial sports enthusiasts, have many places dedicated to them. Fishing and kayaking is also amply supported.
