Holidays in Nievre
Nievre, a department in the heart of France, is dominated by nature. Areas around the Loire River are a haven for bird lovers and you can explore this slow, meandering waterway by canoe from a number of centres in the region. The Canal du Nivernais is a very different type of waterway, stretching from Decize to Clamecy and featuring miles of towpaths and tunnels to explore. You can take boat trips along the canal, if canoeing the Loire is too energetic for you. The Morvan Regional Nature Park is a haven for walkers, climbers and lovers of all outdoor sports. Climb the 2,960-foot peak of Haut-Folin or take a guided walk around the park to learn about its history.

Historic Nevers

The town of Nevers stands on the banks of the Loire River and is the place for you if you enjoy beautiful, historic architecture. Nevers Cathedral is a combination of the ancient and the modern, with contemporary stained glass windows fitted into the Gothic structure. Nevers is also home to the Palais Ducal, a Renaissance chateau built for a local lord in the 15th century. There are other chateaus throughout Nievre, including Marechal Vaubin's country retreat in Bazoches. The chateau has changed little since it was built for the King's minister and many of the rooms have been restored to their former glory.

Visit the Vines

There are numerous vineyards in the region, most of which can be visited or which organise tours and wine tasting events. One weekend a month during the summer, the vineyards in the Pouilly-sur-Loire region take it in turns to hold free tastings and tours for visitors and there are several wine fairs throughout the year. Nievre is not just home to great wines, it also the home of the famous Charolais breed of cattle, which has now spread throughout the world. There is a museum dedicated to these distinctive stocky, white cattle and a breeding competition is held each September in Magny-Cours. Be sure to try a beef dish while in Nievre as it is sure to have come from good quality, local Charolais cows.

Sporting Attraction

The motor racing circuit at Magny-Cours may not host the French Formula 1 race any longer, but it is still home to a full calendar of events if you're a fan or even want to try something different. The Superbike World Championship visits the venue each year and there are local races too. If you prefer to participate rather than spectate, there are various activities you can try out such as karting or even a day-long training course behind the wheel of a Formula 1-style single seated racing car.
