Haut-Rhin department happens to fall on the southern side of Alsace. It is among the original 83 departments formed in 1790 French revolution. Haut-Rhin region forms the key area on the Alsace wine route.
For those who enjoy the beauty of mountains, Haute Rhin is the place of choice to visit. The region is endowed with lots of natural beauty. The villages on this southern Alsace present picturesque scenery with their flower rich vegetation. The towns of Eguisheim & Riquewihr are amongst most beautiful places in France. The tour of the place quickly shows that how little things have changed in this region. The cobbled streets and carvings on the wooden fences and wrought iron showcases itself as an almost 400 year old place. Another very beautiful town Kaysersberg is an eye-catching town, which also features typically bright painted half timber Alsatian houses. The 16th century fortified stone bridge across the river adds to the charm of the local scene.
The Famous Alsace Wine Route
This 170 km route stretches from north to south tracing villages and vineyards, which produce different kind of wines. This route starts at Marlenheim and goes up to Thann near the Mulhouse. Many wine lovers follow this route enjoying different kind of wines at every destination. There are about 50 different wines classified as grand cru, which are made in the villages that lie on this wine trail. The landscape on the wine trail is fantastically scenic where villages are abounding with flower-bedecked houses.
The Haut-Rhin area of France is ideally suited who wish to take a week long vacation and trace the entire wine trail enjoying the delights of local culture and cuisines.
