Holidays in Aube, Champagne Ardenne, France
Aube is a department in northeast France located in the Champagne region of the country. The main town in the region, Troyes, has a beautiful historic centre and the area in general is famous for its stained glass windows. Forests and lakes will keep nature lovers happy, while adventure sports fans are catered for with a range of activities available; canoeing, quad bikes and even a parachute jumping centre.

Troyes is full of winding, narrow streets and half-timbered houses, historic churches and museums. The local tourist office organises walking tours in the summer covering varying distances and subjects, depending on your interest. The town is also home to a modern art museum, a museum in an 18th century apothecary and even a museum of cartoons. The Aube region contains 9000 square metres of stained glass with 1500 square metres in the Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul in Troyes alone.

Gorgeous Glass

Aube is home to many glass blowing and crystal factories, the first one established by a Venetian glass master who settled in the region. Nowadays, you can visit the workshop of Simon Marq, who is the twelfth generation of his family to take up the glass blowing profession, in Villenauxe, which also has a number of churches with spectacular, locally produced stained glass windows. In the town of Bayel is a crystal factory which makes many of the bottles for the locally produced champagne.

Castles and Churches

There are other historic buildings throughout the Aube region, such as the 18th century country house, Chateau de la Motte Tilly. The building is open Wednesday to Sunday for tours, but the gardens are open every day and host concerts and theatrical events in the summer months. Parts of the Château de Droupt Saint Basle date from the 16th century and includes a collection of fine medieval art. The region is home to a number of timber-framed churches, in the villages of Lentilles and Mathaux, for example. All still feature the usual stained glass, sculpture and art works, despite the simplicity of their architecture.

In the Country

The Orient Forest Natural Park offers walking and biking trails for those who prefer greenery to history. The lakes are home to many migratory birds and you may even be lucky enough to spot a White-tailed Eagle. You can kayak and sail on the and the area’s rivers while an equestrian centre within the park offers nature rides or a jaunt in a horse and cart. For the ultimate view of Aube, why not take a parachute jump from the base in Brienne le Chateau.
