Holidays in Cannes, Cote d'Azur / French Riviera, France
Cannes is located on the south east coast of France, in the area known as the French Riviera or the Cote d’Azur. The town is famous for the film festival that is held there annually which offers a great chance for visit to see some movie stars or enjoy world-class cinema. During the rest of the year, Cannes offers tourists’ great beaches, a beautiful old town and the chance to eat and rink in some of the most exclusive places on the Cote d’Azur.

Old Town Attractions

The original town of Cannes is based around the port and the area, known as “Le Suquet” is the oldest part. Here you can explore 12th century ramparts, towers and the cathedral. There are narrow streets that wind to the top of the cliffs giving you a great view over the newer parts of Cannes and the beach. The beaches themselves are sandy in this part of the Cote d’Azur and will get very busy in the summer. The most popular are near the Cap de la Croisette and there are also private beaches with loungers and parasols for hire nearer the town centre. Cannes has a promenade running the length of the bay, which is where anyone who is anyone will take their evening stroll. Most evenings in the summer there will be live musicians and souvenir stalls set up here too.

Shopping and Eating

Cannes is popular with the rich and famous and its shopping streets and good restaurants reflect that. The Rue d’Antibes and Boulevard de la Croisette are home to the most famous boutiques as well as the exclusive art and jewellery stores. If your budget is a bit smaller than the average Hollywood film star, you might prefer the flea market, which is held every Saturday near the old port. Restaurants range in price and quality from five star luxury to traditional eateries serving plenty of fresh locally caught fish.

Film Festival

Every year in May Cannes becomes the centre of attention as the Film Festival comes to town. If you are a fan of the movies, then this is a great opportunity not only to do some celebrity spotting but also to see some fantastic films before they go on general release. Access to the Festival is not as exclusive as you might think, though getting into parties might prove a bit difficult for the average tourist. Tickets for most screenings can be bought online with only the big gala events selling out quickly. Check out the smaller cinemas or less popular documentary screenings if you want to say you’ve been a part of this cultural phenomenon.
