A few months ago, I had the pleasure of being able to go to Prague in the Czech Republic with my wife and a couple of our friends. I found it to be a unique and amazing city that had fun activities to do and also was close by a lot of other exciting places in other parts of Europe. Believe it or not, Prague is becoming a great tourist attraction although I hope it never gets too busy or too crowded because I would really like to visit the place at east one more time.
It really bothers me that a lot of Prague visitors aren't going to really see the historic and cultural landmarks. This is because Prague has become a hot spot for party-goers, such as those who go to bachelor parties. A lot of young men from the UK are going over there just to drink too much and party the night away. Call me picky but I wouldn't want to sep over intoxicated slobs whenever I go out at night. I've heard that places like Barcelona are getting to be that way as well.
Besides that bit of unpleasantness, I really loved the city of Prague. It's historic and elegant and has a lovely, sad quality to it. I can feel that feeling whenever I stroll across the Charles Bridge near nightfall. In the daylight hours, Prague reminds me a lot of New Orleans. There are jazz bands everywhere and the place is extremely festive. I personally would recommend a vacation to Prague for anyone who wants to see fascinating architecture and building design, or anyone who really has an interest in historical things. If you like going through churches, there's a church or other historic building on every block. You can get around on foot or use their bus or tram system to see things that are too far away to get to on foot.
One of my favorite things was an old fashioned town square that contained a unique, historical astronomical clock. At a nearby book store, the specialty books were all of the books written by Franz Kafka, who was also a resident of Prague. The other thing I enjoyed was a quaint river cruise that offered a large buffet and had its own jazz band onboard. Finally, we took in the old Prague Castle and Prague's most famous church, The Cathedral of St. Vitus. They were an amazing sight to behold and to top it all off, we visited the Royal Palace that had a Changing of the Guard, just like you'd see in London.
The Jewish quarter in Prague is especially interesting. They teach you about the cultural and historical aspects of this population and there were museums to visit, along with synagogues and cemeteries. Stories about the holocaust in Prague were especially touching and it really made me think about all they went through.
Those who love art can visit many of Prague's art galleries. They even have a National Gallery in Prague. There are a lot of paintings with religious themes and quite a few that depict the crucifixion. A place called Strahov Monastery is home to some famous libraries with the oldest books I have ever seen. The books are mainly religious but some are secular as well. If you like astronomy, visit the street where Johannes Kepler lived. The architecture is both baroque and rococo in style.
When you're done with seeing the sights, take a break at one of Prague's beautiful restaurants or go shopping at many of the stores that help make Prague a terrific city to visit.
