Liege, a place to excite your taste buds and to loosen the purse strings. Situated on the East side of Belgium, it is easily accessible from the UK via Eurostar to Brussels and then a simple transfer on a local train. The journey from Brussels takes around an hour, bringing the total travelling time to 4 ½ hours, allowing plenty of time for your transfer.
Christmas Markets
The Christmas market in Liege runs from 1st December 2006 to 1st January 2007 in the Place St Lambert and the Place du Marché, situated in the heart of the historic city. The market consists of around 200 wooden stalls that offer all sorts of great gift ideas, including jewellery, traditional crafts and toys, as well as a wide range of Christmas decorations and edible goodies which can be eaten on the spot or taken home - forest mushrooms on toast, oysters, foie gras, chocolate, mulled wine and special Christmas beers.
Outdoor Ice-Rink
In addition to the Christmas market, there will also be an outdoor ice rink. Opening on the 1st December 2006 until the 7th January 2007 and situated in the Place Cathedral, the rink will be open 7 days a week, with late night skating at the weekend. The Place Cathedral will also host a giant Christmas tree.
Beer and Chocolate
The town it's self consists of a mass of narrow alleyways surrounded by impressive houses and a number of historic churches. Shopping in Liege is a must with plenty of opportunities to spend money on produce that Belgium is famous for - beer and chocolate. There are also a number of local markets, where you can barter for some excellent local specialities to take back to the UK.
Nightlife
If you are looking for a lively break, with not only plenty to do during the day, but also entertainment at night, Liege is perfect. Tavernas are open round the clock, so anytime is the perfect time to indulge in some local beer and to dance the night away.
What to do
Aside from the food and drink, there are plenty of other activities to keep you busy. Why not look up the Aquarium et Musee de Zoologie (Aquarium and Zoological Museum) or head for some history and culture at the Cathedral de Liege. You won't be stuck for something to do in Liege, there are a number of chateaux and beautiful old churches that are well worth a visit.
