One might find the name a little weird as I first did upon hearing of Table Mountain but no sooner than I saw what it looked like though, was the name more fitting. Made out of sandstone, this magnificent landmark stands over 3000ft above sea level only to accentuate Cape Town's Skyline with its presence.
There are two ways to go about getting to Table Top Mountain, and one of them is via Table Top Cableway. Relax and take the scenic route to the top as you take in the beauty of Cape Town and its surroundings and fill yourself with anticipation of what you'll see the moment you arrive. If you're the more adventurous kind, the next option of trekking up the mountain would suit you perfectly. The journey is about 3hours, depending on how fast or slow you want to go, but whichever way you choose, the moment you get to the top, you'll be well rewarded.
The view from Table Top Mountain is one words can barely describe. Amazing, simply breathtaking, stunning; take your pick. True beauty is really seen at the top of the mountain. Once atop Table Mountain, talk a stroll through the diverse flora and fauna of over 1500 species. Get up close and personal with the dassies (rock hyrax). These little creatures, resembling bunnies, will shock you when you learn more about them for they are actually not a part of the rodent species, but the closest living relative of the elephant.
You can do many things up top, be it enjoying breakfast facing the 12 Apostles Mountains or choosing from the different paths to go on such as the Agama walk or the Klipspringer walk, both offering 360 spectacular views. However, Table Top Mountain doesn't just end there. Table Top Mountain is now a part of The Table Mountain National Park, stretching from signal hill to the coastline of the peninsula.
Apart from taking in the beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean and the whole of Cape Town in general, don't leave Table Top without first waiting for the 'Table Cloth'. This usually occurs when the south east wind blows and a big cloud appears over the mountain top, giving the illusion of a table cloth from far. Make sure to bring along your jacket as well as it gets a little chilly when the fog comes by, even during the summer seasons.
Immerse yourself in this enchanting place, try everything at least once though I'm sure once you've been there, you'll just keep going back for more.
