Mauritius Travel Tips & Information
The tropical island cocktail of Mauritius lulls you into a timeless zone where your simplest inclinations for pleasure, self-indulgence, easy comfort, gentle exploration, social ease and idle curiosity will reach fulfillment in the most charming way and you will find yourself wafting along in a state of gentle joie de vivre. It is a required measure of sophistication mixed with generous helpings of a dream lifestyle . with white palm-fringed beaches, coral reefs, deep blue skies and exotic local cultures, the island of Mauritius is about as close as you will get to the classic tropical island experience - maybe even better.

The sophisticated tourist destination of Mauritius lies like a rich green emerald in the turquoise velvet of the Indian Ocean. Located 1 100 miles east of the African coast, the island is volcanic in nature, scenically captivating and spiced with a pot-pourri of Creole, Indian, Chinese and French cultures.

The historic capital, Port Louis, still retains much of its original charm, with many interesting landmarks and a bustling marketplace offering a good variety of exotic spices, leather goods and souvenirs. The new modern, exclusive Caudan waterfront complex offers cosmopolitan shops and restaurants, a cinema complex and casino. The north coast of the island is particularly popular, with superb year-round weather and the delightful and elegant seaside resort town of Grand Baie.

A popular day visit is to the breathtaking botanical Pamplemousses Gardens, a haven of many indigenous plants including giant waterlilies, ancient trees and shrubs and giant tortoises.

Quality and high standards apply to every aspect of the island - accommodation, service in the hotels, sightseeing, transportation and attractions. Shoppers find good value and high quality of goods and the people are welcoming, warm and friendly. Their pride in this tiny island republic is reflected in their prosperity and good standards of living. There is virtually no unemployment resulting in an almost crime-free environment.

Mauritius' greatest assets are the beautiful white, sandy beaches, naturally protected by a coral reef that encircles almost the entire island.

The clear, calm waters off the coast offer ideal conditions for a variety of watersports including scuba diving, snorkelling and windsurfing. Outside the reef are prolific deep sea fishing areas, particularly off Le Morne where the marlin breeding grounds yield record trophies annually.
