History of Argentina
The first permanent Spanish settlement in Argentina was established in 1580. The power was seized by a junta in 1810 and independence from Spain was formally declared in 1816. It was followed by a long period of civil wars. An era of economic growth began in the 1880's and lasted for several decades. A series of military coups followed one another until 1983 when the democracy was restored.
